In theory, Salt: A World History is everything I want in a book. So do historic discourses on obscure topics. Kurlansky's Salt: A World History (2003) and Lorraine Daston's Biographies of Scientific Objects (2000). If that wasn't enough, the cover features a quote from Anthony Bourdain. Honestly, Salt: A World History isn't a bad book. It has occasional moments of interest. It's well organized and clearly written---very accessible writing style.
